If you’ve been using earplugs for some time to get a good night’s rest and haven’t been able to, then I hate to be the bearer of bad news, BUT you may only have half of the equation right.
In order to get the most restful sleep possible and produce the valuable melatonin your body needs to correctly regulate your sleep/wake cycles, then you’ll need to not only block out the noises, but you’ll also need to block out the light as well.
You see, complete darkness and a void of sounds will help bring your body into that melatonin induced state that it so badly craves. Unless you sleep in an area that is completely dark (no light coming from your phone, no light coming from your alarm clock and no light creeping in through the blinds in your home), then you’ll need some kind of eye mask or sleep mask.
We’ve evaluated many different products, scoured the Internet and done multiple eye mask reviews to find the best sleep mask for your needs. We’ll introduce our top five picks in a moment but first let’s take a look on the product comparison table:

Dream Essentials Sweet Dreams Lightweight Contoured Sleep Mask Kit – Best Sleep Mask For Side Sleepers
If you are looking for a bundle package that includes sleep earplugs as well as a sleep mask, then this may be what you are looking for. If you are one of those individuals that just can’t seem to sleep on their backs, then this is definitely for you as you’ll find it’s the best sleep mask for side sleepers.
One of the problems with sleep masks is their weight. It’s hard to fall asleep when you can feel something pushing on your eyes. The Dream Essentials mask (available on Amazon) comes in at under an ounce so you’ll barely even now that it’s there. It’s size of 5.5 x 5.5 x 2 inches make it easy to transport in most bags.
The mask itself is very slim and is molded and contoured to fit your face without putting any pressure on your eyes. Many users applauded its ability to completely block out the light. In fact, one user who works night shifts and needs to sleep during the day, enjoyed its effectiveness in blocking all of the light out. One user even went as far as to say it not only blocked out light, but the air from the user’s CPAP machine (which helps with sleep apnea), which in turn stopped the occurrence of dry eyes when using the machine.
There are some users who have reported fraying and some of the material breaking down after regular use, which is to be expected should you use it on a regular basis to sleep. However, another user also mentioned that the inexpensive cost did offset this issue.

Nayoya Sleep Mask – Best Sleep Mask For Travel
Does your job, business or personal life call for you to travel frequently? If you constantly find yourself sleeping in different cities, hotel rooms or plane flights on a regular basis, OR just find that you cannot get the sleep you need if you are not in your own bed, then this may be just what you are looking for.
The Nayoya Sleep Mask quite possibly could be the best sleep mask for travel. The eye pockets of the mask are indented to provide ample space for your eyes to move and blink as they normally would during sleep, without the irritation that could be caused by other masks without an indentation. The elastic band that comes with the mask also allows for proper adjustment and a comfort fit. Widely recognized as THE top choice for travel by frequent flyers, you can see why it is rated as the top rated travel sleep mask, as well as best sleep mask for travel.
Many users enjoy the ability of this mask to block light completely out. One user even stated that it could be completely lit in the room, but you wouldn’t know it due to the mask’s light blocking capability. The same user also recommended this INSTEAD of trying any kind of sleeping pills.
Some users mentioned the fit is not quite ideal for smaller faces and another user who is a side sleeper reported some small amounts of light getting in when sleeping on their side. However, if you are a side sleeper then you may want to check out the Dream Essentials pack mentioned previously. As with the Dream Essentials mask, this bundle also comes with earplugs to help block out the noise you may encounter that may disrupt your sleep.

Bedtime Bliss Contoured & Comfortable Sleep Mask & Moldex Ear Plugs
If you are looking for a sleep mask or eye mask that blocks out bright lights such as light from a street lamp, or perhaps even the light from a television (picture spouses who like to watch TV while you want to sleep), then the Bedtime Bliss eye mask may be the ideal candidate for your needs.
The mask comes in at 9.4 x 0.2 x 2.8 inches. Remember, while big may be considered better, when it comes to sleep masks, the opposite is true when it comes to weight. This mask is a bit lighter so you’ll barely notice the mask on your face. The manufacturer reports that this mask provides more than ample eye movement for men, women and children and that it won’t smudge make up, making it ideal for the woman wanting a quick nap during working hours.
Many users enjoy the ability this mask has in blocking out total light. Many also reported the durability of the product after continuous use. Another user mentioned the cool factor previously mentioned – You can COMPLETELY OPEN your eyes EVEN with them on.
One user though, did mention that it is not very washable. However, if you are only using it during sleeping hours it may not even require a washing. Another user also mentioned that the elastic strap is not long enough for his sized head, though this seems to be a rarity.

Sleep Master Sleep Mask – Best Eye Mask All In One Solution
This sleep and eye mask is a bit different than the others profiled here. While you’ll find the others contoured, this is more of a fitted mask. The cost and size are a bit higher than the rest, but if you are looking for something a little softer and larger, then this may be the best eye mask for you.
The Sleep Master Sleep Mask is sized at 26.5 x 4.5 x 0.4 inches. As mentioned in the title, if you are looking for an all in one solution then check this one out. There is a reason for the larger size.
The Sleep Master Sleep Mask blocks out the light and also covers your ears to muffle any sounds that may disrupt your sleep. While you may require earplugs to completely block out the noise, if all you are looking for is to cover the slight noises in your sleeping area then this may do the trick.
Many users enjoy using this mask because of its size. While other masks are smaller, the size of this mask has had many calling it the best they have used as it has blocked out a large surface area. And with the blockage of a large surface area comes the blockage of any light that may be able to get in.
Some users mentioned that the fit was a bit too snug for their liking. As this one is not of the contoured nature, if you require a mask not as snug then you may want to check out the earlier offerings in this guide. Others also mentioned the Velcro strap sticking to the pillow, however users did say that if the entire Velcro is used then it becomes a non-issue.
If you are looking for a larger all in one option to block out light and muffle sound, then check out the Sleep Master Sleep Mask on Amazon.

This mask comes in at 7.5 x 3.5 inches making it an ideal travel companion to fit in most bags. It’s so small in fact that one user reported being able to fold it up and put it in her purse. Now that’s what we call being able to travel easily!
Many users also mentioned the comfort when using these masks. They mentioned that the light weight of the mask caused them to forget they were even wearing it. However, don’t let the weight fool you into thinking that the mask is not durable. One user mentioned that the mask is equal parts soft and comfortable, yet firm.
There are some users that mentioned the fit not being what they expected, one saying it was a bit too tight. Another user also mentioned the shape of the mask (nose area is cut out) caused some light to enter and did not provide a contoured fit.
If these are issues that concern you, then checking out the other contoured masks in this guide will help alleviate your concerns, and hopefully leave you with the best sleeping mask for your needs.

Three Last Considerations…
Cost – Cost can come into play when purchasing any products. The products reviewed here vary in cost and your decision may be based on this. Take a closer look at your needs and make your decision accordingly, while still taking into consideration the cost (if that is a barrier).
Size – Some like to have a bigger mask to block out the light, while some like a smaller mask due to it’s ease of being able to travel with it. The size of your head will also come into play as you won’t want a smaller mask if you have a larger sized head.
Design – If you are worried about your eyes rubbing against the mask, then you may want to get one with indented or contoured eye pockets. This will allow your eyes to move more freely and naturally during sleep.
As you can see there is much that goes into purchasing the best sleeping mask or best eye mask for your needs. While many of the ones reviewed here can meet most of your needs, only you can decide which one will be best for your specific needs (travel, sleep during the day dealing with sunlight, sleep with others watching TV in the room, etc.).
Take the time to take a closer look at the reviews we have listed here if you haven’t already, as it will put you in the best position to make the best possible decision. Remember – doing so could mean a good night’s rest or another sleepless night.

I bought that Sleep Master mask on eBay about 8 or 9 yrs before it even had a name or a patent. It was just a handmade sleep mask which someone had amazingly, kindly, put consideration into the way the straps adjust and connect, AND most importantly, the fact that a sleep mask should ALSO affect your ears!
I can’t do ear plugs because I have oddly shaped ears and get earaches easily.
Now the inventory of the Sleep Master came up with the idea to help insomnia. I wasn’t getting enough sleep myself due to sleep apnea and depression due to chronic pain. HOWEVER, one thing I’m not sure the creator thought of that this mask is perfect to help with…. is Migraines!! Because I was also having those at the time and this mask was PERFECT to help with that! I can’t deal with Sights or Sounds during a migraine and have to lay down and attempt to sleep. That mask was the perfect partner in aiding me through the many hours of eyeball-splattering, brain-melting, fall-to-your-knees-helplessly pain!
